It is difficult and time consuming to gather and prepare data. Even with the benefits of automation, a person must still sort through the information. When we decided to acquire detail on Military Contracts we searched the Department of Defense Website. The contracts were found and they did have a somewhat predictable structure, but each contract was a blurb with no parsing of financial information, dates, or company tickers. Various programs were written to pull out and update this information so contracts could be summed across dates, and ordered within the larger framework of business data maintained here. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Halliburton, Northrup Grumman are just a few of a vast network of companies profiting from war. It is our hope that presenting meaningful uses of DOD defense contract information for public review will promote better access to this information.
